Types of rig

Do you know what is rig? Rig is a tool that used to execute drilling. There are types of rig based on the environment where drilling will did. They are;
A. onshore rig
This is rig that used while drilling take place at land area. Draw below is example of onshore rig that still used by PT Pertamina EP Cepu. The rig was established since Netherland era and never changed, the treatment only at spare part.

Instead the old rig, Pertamina EP also have well that drilled by modern rig, it also placed at Cepu area. The rig isn’t owned by Pertamina EP but it owned by PT Pertamina drilling service.

And the pic below is the rig that used by Texaco ( Chevron ) at USA. USA still use the old rig in their country to minimalize the lifting rate, but they use modern rig while they drilling outside their country.

B. Offshore rig
Offshore rig used while the drilling running in the sea. This rig divided into five types based on the depth of drilling.
1. swamp barge
Swamp barge is a rig that used while drilling take place at swamp area.

2. Jack up
Jack up is a rig that used in drilling while occur at depth of seafloor less than 350 feet. The rig erected on the pillar that sticked in the seafloor.

3. Fixed platform
This is divided inti two types ;
a. Piled steel platform
This rig have pillars that stick into the sea floor, so the rig is stable although the seawave is very big. The rig operate at the sea with the depth is 1000 ft and the rig is immobile.

b. Gravity structure
The pillar was erected on the concrete and the shape of pillar is tabular that used to flowing the oil that extracted from the reservoir. The rig can not mobile to other place.

4. Semisubmersible
The rig that operate in the sea with depth less than 1500 fett. The rig placed on the “ponton” that have 4 legs. This legs that make semisubs can floating so the rig can easily mobile to other place. When the rig drilling the reservoir,semisubs will throw the roots to the seafloor. How to bring the rig onto the middle of sea? Usually this rig carried by the ship.

5. and the last is drillship
A drillship is a maritime vessel that has been fitted with drilling apparatus. It is most often used for exploratory drilling of new oil or gas wells in deep water but can also be used for scientific drilling. It is often built on a modified tanker hull and outfitted with a dynamic positioning system to maintain its position over the well.

Drillships are able to drill in water depths of over 2000 meters.

In order to drill, a Marine Riser is lowered to the seabed with a Blow Out Preventer (BOP) at the bottom.

Drillships are just one way to perform exploratory drilling. This function can also be performed by Semi-submersibles, jackup barges, barges, or platform rigs.
